The UN General Assembly has voted to renew Volker Türk's mandate as UN high commissioner for human rights for another four years, overcoming opposition from the US and Russia. The assembly approved his reappointment to a second term running from October 2026 to October 2030, with 144 votes in favour, 10 against and 13 abstentions.

US and Russia Opposition

Before the vote, the US deputy envoy urged member states to vote no, warning of consequences if the assembly tolerates "procedural overreach" and "misuse of UN posts." Russia's deputy envoy accused Türk of political bias and serving Western geopolitical interests, questioning whether he met the standards required for the position.

Türk's Response

In social media posts, the pro-Israeli UN Watch group criticised Türk for condemning Israel 58 times during his tenure. Türk said he is "deeply grateful" for the opportunity to continue serving, adding: "Human rights are the antidote to today's turbulence and defeatism. I will give my all for the rights of everyone, everywhere."
