Turkish FM meets UN Cyprus envoy, reiterates support for two-state solution

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with UN Secretary-General's personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín Cuellar, in Ankara on Friday. The meeting discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus issue ahead of the UN chief's planned visit to the island, according to Foreign Ministry sources.

Türkiye's Position

Fidan reiterated that Türkiye, as a guarantor power and the Turkish Cypriots' motherland, believes "the most realistic solution lies in the coexistence of the two states on the island." He said approaches that fail to recognise the Turkish Cypriot people's inherent rights to sovereign equality and equal international status "will not contribute to a solution."

Background and Dispute

The UN concluded in October 2024 that no common ground existed between the parties for a formal settlement. A new cooperation process launched in 2025 aimed at building trust, but no meaningful progress was achieved, largely due to the Greek Cypriot side's negative stance on key issues. The dispute remains unresolved after decades of diplomatic efforts.
