King Charles visits Turkish-backed Cambridge Central Mosque

King Charles III visited Cambridge Central Mosque this week in what marked the first official visit by a reigning British monarch to a mosque in the United Kingdom, amid rising concerns over Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims.

Historic royal visit

The British sovereign met with trustees, imams, and community members at the mosque, which stands as Europe's first eco-friendly Islamic place of worship. Türkiye's Ambassador to London Osman Koray Ertas, Cambridge Mosque Trust Board members Zeynep Coskun Koc and Selim Argun, and British author Abdulhakim Murad attended the gathering alongside invited guests. King Charles received a glass paperweight inspired by the Selimiye Mosque dome architecture, a limited-edition copy of Fuat Sezgin's The Scientific Heritage of Islamic Civilization, and a prestige volume documenting the mosque's construction and awards.

Koc told Anadolu that the visit carried historic weight for the institution and the public. "For the first time, a British king paid an official visit to a mosque. Previously, his mother, Queen (Elizabeth), paid a visit to a mosque in 2002, but there had not been a visit for 20 years, and a king had never officially visited a mosque before," she said, noting that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter to the monarch extending an invitation to Türkiye.

Turkish backing and green architecture

The Cambridge Mosque Trust Board member emphasized that support from Türkiye proved decisive in establishing the facility in the English university city. "It was the Turkish Diyanet Foundation that understood the value of building this mosque, what it would add here, and supported us. The Turkish Diyanet Foundation has been our biggest supporter from the very beginning," Koc stated. She added that Erdogan followed every construction detail personally and inaugurated the mosque in 2019 after the foundation provided the largest donations for the project.

The structure incorporates Islamic geometric patterns alongside Cambridge's local architectural heritage, drawing inspiration from King's College Chapel's fan vaults and Romsey district brickwork. The building operates with photovoltaic panels, air-source heat pumps, and a sedum roof, maintaining a zero-carbon footprint through natural ventilation systems and sustainably sourced timber. Rainwater collection and solar generation cover approximately 40 percent of the mosque's electrical needs, while sensors regulate interior air quality and temperature.

Interfaith significance

Murad highlighted the visit's symbolic importance for British Muslims at a time of rising anxiety and misunderstanding across the United Kingdom, noting that the local bishop and rabbi joined the event. The British researcher stated that King Charles spent considerable time speaking with young people and children during the tour, demonstrating his interest in sustainable technologies and community bridging.

Opened in 2019 with capacity for approximately 1,000 worshippers, the mosque operates with photovoltaic panels, air-source heat pumps, and a sedum roof to maintain its zero-carbon footprint. The structure received 23 international awards for design elements blending Islamic geometric patterns with Cambridge's local architectural heritage, including fan vaults inspired by nearby King's College Chapel.
