Thirty special-shaped balloons from 10 countries will ascend over Cappadocia during the seventh international balloon festival, with Türkiye's Culture and Tourism Ministry organizing the four-day event from July 30 to Aug. 2 amid the region's renowned fairy chimneys.

Thirty special-shaped hot air balloons from 10 countries will join the daily commercial fleet over Cappadocia's fairy chimneys for the seventh international balloon festival, with Türkiye's Culture and Tourism Ministry organizing the four-day event from July 30 to Aug. 2. The UNESCO World Heritage region in central Türkiye — renowned as one of the world's premier ballooning destinations — will host pilots and support crews from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil, Slovakia, Austria, and Poland alongside domestic operators.

Designed in the shapes of the flag of Türkiye, an octopus, an owl, a clown, a chick, a wolf, a duck, a parrot, a rocket, a heart, and the Earth, the special balloons will rise over the valleys at sunrise each morning before returning for illuminated glow displays at the Pasabag Open-Air Museum in the evening, according to Anadolu Agency. The 30 festival balloons will fly alongside the region's 156 commercial hot air balloons, which operate daily throughout the year.

'Incredible spectacle' distinguishes region

Festival coordinator Mehmet Halis Aydogan told Anadolu that interest in the event has continued to grow, though participation has been capped because of the region's already busy balloon traffic. "Balloon festivals are held in many parts of the world. There are major festivals in the United States, France, Belgium and Mexico," he said, noting that Cappadocia's daily volume of 156 commercial balloons sets it apart. "When we decorate the skies with special-shaped balloons, it creates an incredible spectacle. That is what distinguishes us most from other festivals," Aydogan added.

He said demand from Europe had been particularly strong this year, but participation was limited to 30 special-shaped balloons because of the high volume of regular flights in the region. Balloon pilots and support crews arriving from abroad had begun entering Türkiye as final preparations were completed, he noted.

Student-designed whale to make maiden flight

The festival will also feature the maiden flight of a whale-shaped balloon designed by sixth-grade student Bengi Serra Kaya, winner of the "My Dream Balloon Design Competition" organized among primary and middle school students. "Our first-prize balloon has been specially produced and will make its inaugural flight. Children have shown tremendous interest in the festival, and we want to build on that enthusiasm," Aydogan said.

Balloon pilots and support crews from the 10 participating nations have begun entering Türkiye as final preparations for the July 30 opening were completed, according to Anadolu Agency. The region's 156 commercial hot air balloons operate daily throughout the year, carrying thousands of passengers over the UNESCO-listed landscape of fairy chimneys and underground cities.
