Türkiye rejects claims Mecca pact conflicts with NATO

Türkiye's Communications Directorate on Friday rejected allegations circulating on social media that the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement conflicts with NATO's collective defense obligations, characterizing the claims as a targeted perception management campaign without factual basis.

Disinformation Campaign

In a statement on the Turkish platform NSosyal, the Directorate's Center for Countering Disinformation (DMM) described assertions that the trilateral pact contradicts Article 5 as "entirely false." "The allegations constitute a perception management campaign whose source is readily apparent," the center said. Officials urged citizens to disregard "unfounded claims and manipulative posts" circulating across social media platforms.

Complementary Framework

The DMM emphasized that the agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan does not represent an alternative to NATO membership. Instead, the arrangement serves as a complementary mechanism supporting regional stability. "Türkiye's efforts to develop regional partnerships are not an alternative to its NATO membership," the statement said, adding that the pact is "not an aggressive military bloc but a defense-oriented arrangement designed to enhance deterrence."

Presidential Clarification

The rebuttal followed remarks earlier on Friday by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who signed the pact with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Erdogan said the agreement "targets no country" and remains open to other friendly nations seeking regional peace. He noted that the collective deterrence framework would strengthen counterterrorism efforts and joint defense projects while reaffirming Ankara's commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy based on international law.
