Turkish Cypriots are equal owners of island: TRNC president

TRNC President Tufan Erhurman on Monday declared that Turkish Cypriots constitute an integral and equal element of Cyprus, firmly rejecting any characterization of the community as a minority during anniversary commemorations in Lefkosa. The president spoke at events marking 52 years since the Cyprus Peace Operation, which is observed annually on July 20 as Peace and Freedom Day.

Equal status

Erhurman emphasized that Turkish Cypriots remain committed to reaching a comprehensive settlement but have no interest in negotiations conducted merely for the sake of talks. "This people are an essential element and equal owner of the island. They are not a minority, have never been one, and never will be," he said during the ceremony.

Solution process

The president noted that the UN-led peace process is being conducted "in consultation and full coordination" with Türkiye. "We firmly reject making our people and children pay the price of the lack of a solution under circumstances in which a settlement could not be reached for reasons not caused by us," Erhurman stated. He added that Turkish Cypriots would not relinquish their rights, equality, or security while supporting efforts for lasting stability.

Historical context

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at union with Greece prompted Türkiye's military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was established in 1983 after ethnic attacks starting in the early 1960s had forced Turkish Cypriots to withdraw into enclaves for their safety. The island has seen intermittent peace efforts, including a failed 2017 initiative in Switzerland and the 2004 Annan Plan — rejected by Greek Cypriots in a referendum that same year they joined the European Union.
