The Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association said electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for more than half of all passenger car sales in Türkiye during the first seven months of the year, as diesel registrations continued their sharp decline amid the global phaseout of combustion engines.

The Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association reported on Monday that electric and hybrid vehicles captured more than half of Türkiye's passenger car market during the first seven months of the year, even as overall sales volumes declined. Türkiye's passenger car sales fell 12.1% year-on-year to 502,712 units in January through July, while light commercial vehicle registrations dropped 5.1% to 136,253 units, according to the association's consolidated data.

Electrified vehicles — comprising fully electric, extended-range, and hybrid models — accounted for 51.7% of total sales with 259,970 units delivered. Gasoline-powered car sales declined 19.8% to 208,046 units, with market share falling from 45.3% to 41.4%, while hybrid vehicle registrations rose 3.5% to 162,924 units and increased their share from 28% to 33%.

Diesel Phaseout

Fully electric vehicles reached 93,403 units, with extended-range models bringing the total EV count to 94,046 units and an 18.7% market share, up from 18.1% in the same period last year. Diesel car sales plummeted 32% to 30,790 units, representing a decline from 7.9% to 6.1% of the market, while liquefied petroleum gas-powered vehicles saw a modest 4.1% increase to 3,906 units. Industry experts said the steep decline in diesel registrations stems primarily from manufacturers' global phaseout of diesel engine production.

July Figures

In July alone, electric vehicle sales reached 12,715 units, representing a 20.4% share of the passenger car market despite a 27.1% decline compared to the same month last year. Hybrid sales totaled 20,120 units in July, capturing 32.2% of the market.
