US Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday to join Pakistan-mediated negotiations with Iranian officials, stating he is "very confident" that Washington and Tehran can sustain their ceasefire as delegations prepare to address technical elements of the nascent Islamabad Agreement.

US delegation arrives

US Vice President JD Vance touched down at Emmen military airfield north of Lucerne at 5:59 am local time on Sunday, having departed Washington the previous day to participate in the Pakistan-mediated negotiations. The talks are scheduled to take place in Burgenstock on the opposite shore of Lake Lucerne under the framework of the Islamabad Agreement, which entered into force on June 18 after being signed digitally by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.

Vance noted that US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff were already positioned at the site to address what he described as "technical elements" of the negotiations. He expressed being "very confident" that Washington and Tehran can sustain the current ceasefire, which ended nearly four months of armed conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Diplomatic priorities

Speaking to reporters before departing the United States, Vance indicated that the Iranian delegation had recently arrived in Switzerland and anticipated a "couple days of talks." "I think we're going to hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue," Vance said, identifying these points as the two primary focus areas for the American team.

Vance acknowledged that Iranian representatives would likely present their own agenda for the discussions. Addressing concerns that ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon might disrupt the diplomatic process, he noted that "things are actually getting better there, and things are slowing down a little bit." Asked what would constitute a successful trip, Vance stated that "getting things set up in the right way, and getting the actual structure and negotiation in place" remained his immediate objective.

High-level regional presence

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who will lead the Iranian delegation, arrived earlier in Zurich ahead of the technical talks, according to state media. The Pakistani mediation team will be represented by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who departed Islamabad for Switzerland the previous night with a high-level delegation.

The talks in Burgenstock represent the first high-level engagement between Washington and Tehran since the digital signing of the Islamabad Agreement on June 18, which formally ended nearly four months of hostilities that had shuttered the Strait of Hormuz. Delegations are expected to remain in Switzerland for several days to address implementation protocols.
