Trump vows no Hormuz tolls during truce, warns of US fees later

US President Donald Trump announced Saturday that no maritime fees will be permitted in the Strait of Hormuz during the current 60-day ceasefire, warning that Washington may impose its own tolls thereafter to reimburse security costs.
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that no maritime fees will be permitted in the Strait of Hormuz during the current 60-day ceasefire, warning that Washington may later impose its own tolls for "services rendered as the guardian angel" to Middle Eastern nations.
Post-truce tolls
Trump stated that after the 60-day period, fees might be collected to ensure "reimbursement of costs" for past and future security services should a final deal remain incomplete. "There will be no tolls ... unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America," the US president wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Iranian closure threat
The ultimatum follows an announcement from Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters that the waterway will be closed due to alleged US breaches of commitment and Israeli ceasefire violations in Lebanon. Tehran has accused Washington of failing to uphold terms of the truce, though specific violations were not detailed in the statement.
US military response
US Central Command dismissed Iran's claim of controlling the strategic chokepoint, asserting that American forces remain "present and vigilant" to ensure compliance with all aspects of the agreement. "Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz," CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins told Axios, adding that maritime traffic remains intact.
The 60-day ceasefire period began following weeks of hostilities between Washington and Tehran that have threatened commercial shipping through the vital transit route. Maritime traffic has continued through the strait despite repeated threats of closure from Iranian military officials.
