Saudi Entertainment Authority Chairman Turki Al-Sheikh announced that American actor Giancarlo Esposito has embraced Islam during filming in the kingdom, reciting the Shahada and joining prayers at a local mosque after positive interactions with the local Muslim community.

Saudi Entertainment Authority Chairman Turki Al-Sheikh announced on Sunday that American actor Giancarlo Esposito has embraced Islam while filming in the kingdom, with the Breaking Bad star reciting the Islamic declaration of faith and performing prayers alongside production crew members at a local mosque.

Spiritual journey on set

According to the Saudi Gazette, Al-Sheikh stated that Esposito recited the Shahada — the Islamic testimony of faith — during his stay in Saudi Arabia. The actor reportedly joined members of the production team in prayer at a mosque while working on the upcoming film Seven Dogs, with social media footage showing him participating in the religious observance alongside colleagues on set.

Al-Sheikh indicated that Esposito's decision followed positive experiences interacting with local Muslims during the production period. The actor expressed particular appreciation for the hospitality and community spirit he encountered while filming in the kingdom, according to the chairman's remarks to the press.

Career and Saudi cinema push

Esposito has built a decades-long career spanning acclaimed television series and major film franchises. He earned international recognition and multiple award nominations for his portrayal of Gus Fring in Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul, while also appearing in Disney's The Mandalorian and other high-profile productions.

The actor is currently involved in filming Seven Dogs, one of several major international productions attracted to Saudi Arabia as the kingdom expands its entertainment sector and develops its film industry. Riyadh has been working to position itself as a regional hub for cinema and production, offering incentives to draw foreign talent and studios to support its economic diversification goals.
