Yemen's health minister said the death toll remains preliminary after Friday's strikes on the central city targeted residential areas and camps for displaced people, as authorities ordered health facilities to raise their alert levels.

Yemen's Health Minister Qasim Buhaibeh said on Friday that two people were killed and 14 others injured in Houthi missile and drone attacks on the central city of Marib, warning that casualty figures remain preliminary as authorities scramble to respond. Buhaibeh wrote that the attacks "targeted residential neighborhoods and camps for internally displaced people," adding that officials had instructed all medical centers to raise their readiness levels.

Air defense operations

Earlier on Friday, Yemen's Defense Ministry reported that its forces had intercepted several Houthi unmanned aerial vehicles over Marib before they could reach their targets. The Iran-aligned group did not immediately issue a statement regarding the government's claims about the attacks or the interceptions.

Renewed violence

The assault comes amid intermittent clashes on multiple front lines across Yemen since early July that have produced dozens of casualties among both government and Houthi forces. Fighting has continued sporadically despite a relative lull in major combat since April 2022, when a truce took hold in a war that began more than 11 years ago between government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition and the Houthi movement, which seized the capital Sanaa on Sept. 21, 2014.
