Scientists in China have developed a molasses-based mixture to reduce dust in open-pit coal mines, with field tests showing significant results. The method, tested at a mine in Inner Mongolia, suppressed dust for up to three days in small-scale trials and over six hours in heavy-traffic conditions.
Chinese researchers have developed an unusual solution to tackle dust pollution in open-pit coal mines: a molasses-based mixture. Tested at the Haerwusu Open-Pit Coal Mine in Inner Mongolia, the method showed promising results in reducing airborne particles while maintaining ground moisture for extended periods.
How It Works
The mixture was sprayed onto haul roads used by heavy mining vehicles. According to the researchers, the high sugar content of molasses binds fine dust particles together. Once the water evaporates, it leaves behind a protective layer on the road surface, significantly reducing the amount of dust kicked up by passing vehicles. In small-scale trials, treated areas remained dust-free for three days, while larger tests with heavy-tonnage trucks achieved effective control for more than six hours.
Potential Benefits
The team said the method offers significant advantages for mines operating in hot, dry climates. Reduced water consumption for dust suppression could lower operational costs and ease water usage pressures. Further field trials are planned to test the system at other mining sites.
