Türkiye campaign reveals $2.3 trillion economic toll of terrorism

The Turkish Communications Directorate on Thursday launched a comprehensive digital communications campaign under the "National Solidarity" hashtag, presenting extensive statistical data demonstrating that combating terrorism has cost Türkiye's economy — approximately $2.3 trillion — over the past four decades. In a professionally produced video and accompanying series of detailed infographics shared through the Directorate's official social media accounts, the campaign meticulously outlined how redirecting those substantial resources could have dramatically expanded the country's development and investment capacity across multiple strategic sectors. The initiative quickly gained significant traction across digital platforms, receiving broad support from Cabinet ministers, members of parliament and numerous political figures who shared posts highlighting the campaign's central message and emphasizing the critical significance of achieving a "Terror-Free Türkiye" for sustainable economic development and social cohesion.

Energy independence and transport networks

According to the detailed breakdown provided by the campaign, the $2.3 trillion expenditure could have financed extensive solar power plants capable of meeting Türkiye's entire electricity demand for approximately 23 years, or alternatively, wind power facilities sufficient to generate the country's electricity needs for 17 years. The same substantial budget could have funded the construction of 1,888 Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridges, 1,106 Osmangazi Bridges, 195 Northern Marmara Motorways, 218 Istanbul Airports and 1,504 Eurasia Tunnels, effectively transforming the nation's transport infrastructure and logistics capacity.

Healthcare, housing and education gaps

In the healthcare sector, the campaign estimated that the funding could have been used to build 5,150 fully equipped city hospitals and 3,650,750 family health centers, significantly strengthening the national health system throughout Türkiye. The housing sector could have benefited from 36,298,000 social housing units or 31,112,600 earthquake-resistant homes, addressing critical accommodation needs, while education could have seen the construction of 460,000 schools each with 24 classrooms, totaling approximately 11 million classrooms nationwide. The resources could have also financed 1,150 new dams, 66,500 firefighting helicopters or 32,000 firefighting aircraft, bolstering the country's civil defense capabilities against natural disasters.

Call for national unity

In an official statement accompanying the video release, the directorate emphasized that terrorism had targeted not only the nation's security architecture but also its economic development trajectory and social welfare systems, draining resources that could have built the country's future. "Terror targeted not only our security and our spirit of national solidarity, but also our economy, our future and our prosperity," the statement said, underscoring that decades of counterterrorism spending prevented vital investments in energy, education, healthcare, transportation, industry and technology. "As our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated, when the goal of a Terror-Free Türkiye is achieved, all 86 million members of our nation and our entire country will be the winners," the statement added.
