Spider-Man: Brand New Day smashes North American box office record

The latest installment in the Marvel franchise crossed the half-billion-dollar threshold at US and Canadian theaters in only seven days, Sony Pictures said Thursday, establishing a new benchmark for domestic box office velocity and eclipsing the previous standard set by Avengers: Endgame in April 2019.

Domestic records

Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached the $500 million mark one full day faster than the previous record holder, which had required eight days to achieve the same figure following its release five years ago. The film is projected to conclude its first full week with more than $508 million in cumulative receipts across the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates.

Global performance

The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed feature had already established the largest domestic opening weekend in history with $360 million while securing $932 million worldwide — the second-biggest global debut in cinema history. The production later surpassed $1 billion in international receipts within six days, falling just one day short of the speed record maintained by Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel Studios and producer Amy Pascal mounted the project on a reported budget of $225 million. The film stars Tom Holland and Zendaya alongside Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, with the ensemble driving the superhero sequel to unprecedented commercial velocity since its theatrical release.
