Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have been halted following renewed hostilities, according to The Wall Street Journal. Talks expected to resume in Switzerland this weekend were stalled after Iran attacked a commercial vessel and the US struck Iranian targets. No American casualties were reported.

Ongoing talks between the United States and Iran have been stalled by the recent resumption of fighting between the two countries, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday, citing sources. The talks were expected to resume this weekend in Switzerland but have been halted by the military escalation, despite ongoing efforts to implement a broader 14‑point understanding reached after weeks of regional tensions.

Escalation and retaliation

On Saturday, the US military's Central Command carried out strikes against multiple targets in Iran after Tehran's latest attack on a commercial ship near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responded by launching missile and drone strikes targeting eight US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain. According to CNN, a US official said Sunday that "all drones and missiles launched by Iran were shot down, intercepted, or failed to reach their intended targets," adding that there were no US casualties or damage to American facilities.

Agreement under strain

On June 18, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at reaching a lasting peace agreement, and talks began on June 21 to implement its provisions, including ending hostilities, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and setting temporary maritime transit arrangements. However, the new clashes have cast doubt on the diplomatic process.
