UN hails Israel-Lebanon framework as 'milestone' for stability

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric welcomed the June 26 trilateral agreement between Washington, Tel Aviv and Beirut as a "milestone" toward ending decades of conflict, while warning that dialogue remains essential to resolve outstanding issues along the Blue Line.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Monday welcomed the US-sponsored trilateral framework between Israel and Lebanon, describing the June 26 agreement as a "milestone" in efforts to end decades of conflict and advance lasting stability. Speaking at a news conference, Dujarric said that "the trilateral framework between the US, the State of Israel, and the Republic of Lebanon, announced on June 26th, constitutes a milestone in efforts to end decades of conflict and advance lasting stability." He added that "We continue to underscore the importance of resolving outstanding issues through dialogue to achieve sustainability on both sides of the Blue Line and to ensure sovereignty and security for both Israel and Lebanon," according to Anadolu Agency.
The UN remains committed to supporting both nations in fulfilling obligations toward a long-term solution under Security Council Resolution 1701, Dujarric stated. The framework aims to facilitate a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and reduce hostilities along the border, which has seen renewed violence since early March.
Border violations continue despite deal
Despite the diplomatic progress, Israeli military activities persisted along the Blue Line over the weekend. Citing UNIFIL observations, Dujarric noted that "no launches of projectiles were observed in the mission's area of operations over the weekend," though he stressed that kinetic ground activities and air violations by Israeli forces continued unabated.
Specific incidents reported by UN peacekeepers included Israeli tanks opening small arms fire toward Al Mansouri in Sector West on Saturday. Dujarric said that "On Saturday, UNIFIL peacekeepers observed two Israeli tanks opening small arms fire towards Al Mansouri in Sector West," adding that personnel faced Israeli restrictions on their movement. He further reported that on Sunday, the Israeli army "blocked a UNIFIL explosive ordnance disposal team that was going to dispose of an explosive hazard on the road near Al Bayyadah in Sector West. That caused a temporary halt to the mission," according to the UN.
Israeli offensive enters fourth month
Israel has maintained an offensive against Lebanon since March 2 that has killed at least 4,246 people, injured 12,190 and displaced more than 1 million, according to official figures. Israeli forces occupy areas in southern Lebanon — some for decades and others captured during the previous war between 2023 and 2024 — and have pushed more than 10 kilometers (6 miles) into Lebanese territory during the current campaign.
