US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose 100% tariffs on all goods from countries adopting digital services taxes targeting American firms, saying the punitive measure would override existing trade agreements immediately upon implementation.
US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose 100% tariffs on imports from any country adopting digital services taxes targeting American companies, warning that several European nations are close to implementing such measures. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the countries are discussing imminent adoption of the taxes.
"Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this," he wrote. "Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America," he said.
Trade deal override
Trump noted the tariff would supersede existing trade agreements. "This TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not. Additionally, the 100% TARIFF will be immediately imposed, if they proceed," he stated. Digital services taxes typically target revenues of large technology firms from online advertising.
