Syria begins restoration of historic Omari Mosque after ICESCO listing

Syrian authorities have launched restoration of the Omari Mosque in Daraa after its inclusion on the ICESCO heritage list. The 7th-century mosque, one of the oldest Islamic landmarks in the Levant, sustained extensive damage during the civil war. The designation opens the way for international cooperation.
Syrian authorities have launched restoration of the historic Omari Mosque in the southern city of Daraa after its inclusion on the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) heritage list, officials said Thursday. Mohammad Nasrallah, head of Daraa's Antiquities Department, said the recognition highlights the mosque's more than 13 centuries of history. The Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums said the designation reinforces the mosque's historical and cultural significance and opens the way for international cooperation in documentation, restoration and technical expertise.
Historical significance and damage
The mosque was built during the reign of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab in the first half of the seventh century atop Roman and Byzantine archaeological remains. It holds deep historical and political significance, having served as the focal point of the first anti-regime protests in Daraa in 2011. The mosque sustained extensive damage during attacks by the former regime, including the collapse of its historic square minaret after shelling in 2012. Authorities have begun a comprehensive restoration project for the black basalt structure, aiming to repair damage while preserving the site's architectural authenticity in line with internationally recognised conservation standards.
Post-Assad restoration
Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia in December 2024, ending the Baath Party regime that had ruled Syria since 1963. A transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa took office in January 2025.
