UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer makes his resignation statement outside 10 Downing Street in London, United Kingdom on June 22, 2026.

Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he will step down as British prime minister and Labour Party leader following mounting pressure over his party's poor showing in last month's local elections, stating he will remain in office until a successor is chosen before parliament returns in September.

Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation as British prime minister and Labour Party leader, yielding to mounting pressure from parliamentary colleagues following disappointing results in last month's local elections that had triggered widespread speculation about his future.

Downing Street statement

Standing outside his official residence, Starmer confirmed he had informed King Charles III of his decision earlier in the day. "I will resign as leader of the Labour Party. I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision," he announced, noting that his parliamentary party had questioned whether he remained the best choice to lead them into the next general election.

Leadership contest

The prime minister acknowledged that his departure followed direct feedback from Labour MPs regarding his leadership prospects. "I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace," Starmer said. He indicated that the party's National Executive Committee would establish a formal timetable for selecting his replacement, with nominations set to open on July 9.

Transition timeline

Starmer outlined a schedule designed to install a new leader before the Commons reconvenes in September. "In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before parliament returns in September," he stated, adding that he would continue to serve as prime minister throughout the contest period. "I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power," he added.
