Tusk: Polish, German troops jointly reinforce Russia border

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Wednesday that Polish and German soldiers have launched joint operations to reinforce Poland’s border with Russia, hailing the deployment as evidence of effective bilateral defense coordination. “Polish and German soldiers are strengthening the border with Russia together,” Tusk said on the US social media platform X. “Such things are possible only under Tusk,” he added, referring to his administration’s role in the initiative.

The collaboration forms part of East Shield, Poland’s long-term program to fortify its eastern borders with defensive obstacles, surveillance systems and military infrastructure. Warsaw and Berlin signed a defense cooperation agreement in June that includes coordination on the East Shield initiative and measures to facilitate the movement of allied forces through Polish territory.

Rotational deployments

German troops are deployed in Poland on a rotational basis to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank, with soldiers from both nations conducting joint engineering operations along the frontier, according to official video releases. A German soldier said the deployment aims to strengthen defensive capabilities, while Polish soldiers noted that the cooperation enables the exchange of operational experience during technical work on border infrastructure.

The joint operations mark a significant integration of Polish and German military engineering capabilities along the frontier. German personnel rotate through the deployment on a regular basis, while Polish forces coordinate the installation of defensive infrastructure as part of the multi-year East Shield investment program.
