State‑owned Pakistan LNG Limited has issued an emergency tender for a spot LNG cargo after renewed hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz disrupted scheduled shipments from Qatar. The urgent procurement highlights the country’s vulnerability to Gulf shipping disruptions, as it relies heavily on Qatari LNG under long‑term contracts.
Pakistan has launched an urgent tender to secure a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo after traffic through the Strait of Hormuz ground to a near halt amid fresh US‑Iran clashes. State‑owned Pakistan LNG Limited issued the spot tender for delivery on July 15‑16, following the cancellation of a scheduled Qatari shipment this month. The tender, issued under reference PLL/IMP/LNGT74, was published Thursday and is due to close Friday.
Disruption and exposure
The move comes after attacks on commercial vessels near the strait and US strikes on Iran brought shipping in the critical waterway to a standstill. Pakistan relies heavily on Qatari LNG under long‑term contracts, leaving the country exposed to interruptions in Gulf shipping. A Qatari shipment bound for Pakistan aborted its journey through the strait earlier this week . The energy shortfall comes as Islamabad has already been forced to buy spot cargoes at elevated prices to stave off domestic gas shortages.
