The prefecture's government announced that search and rescue operations had concluded Saturday at an Aeon shopping mall where an explosion following the tremor killed seven workers and injured five others.

Evacuees face heat and water shortages

More than 9,200 evacuees remain in 210 emergency shelters across Kumamoto, while over 3,400 houses sustained damage and tap water remains unavailable to 69,000 households and businesses. Medical facilities are working to resume normal operations as temperatures exceeded 37 degrees Celsius (99 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, with approximately 30 people hospitalized for suspected heatstroke symptoms. Officials cautioned that the full extent of structural damage remains undetermined and that ongoing inspections may reveal additional compromised buildings.
