Azerbaijan urges Israel to reconsider 'genocide' recognition

Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry on Monday criticized Israel's decision to recognize the 1915 events as "genocide," saying it was seriously concerned by the move and urging Jerusalem to reconsider a step it said distorts historical facts and deepens regional divisions.
Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry on Monday issued a sharp rebuke of Israel's decision to recognize the 1915 events as "genocide," saying it was seriously concerned by what it described as a distortion of historical facts. The ministry called on Jerusalem to reconsider the politically charged move, warning that such decisions risked undermining regional stability efforts.
The ministry said in a statement that politicizing historical events does not contribute to reconciliation or mutual understanding but instead deepens existing divisions. "It is unacceptable to distort historical facts about the events of 1915 and turn complex historical processes into the subject of political decisions far removed from legal and scientific foundations," it said.
Regional stability
Baku stressed that the Israeli decision hinders efforts to achieve lasting peace in the South Caucasus, a region where Azerbaijan has sought to promote sustainable stability through diplomatic engagement. The ministry noted that turning complex historical processes into political tools only serves to inflame tensions rather than resolve them, according to the official statement.
"Azerbaijan will continue to maintain its consistent position in defense of historical truths, respect for the principles of international law and promotion of sustainable peace in the region," the ministry said. It added that Baku remains committed to upholding historical accuracy and international legal norms while working to prevent further polarization.
