July 15 'historic turning point' for Türkiye: Communications director

Communications Director Burhanettin Duran on Tuesday described the defeated July 15, 2016 coup attempt as "a historic turning point that secured Türkiye's future and its democratic journey," stressing that the nation's spontaneous resistance demonstrated to the world that no force could subjugate its democratic will.

Message on Democracy and National Unity Day

In a message posted on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal under the hashtag #VictoryIsOurs, Duran marked the 10th anniversary of Democracy and National Unity Day. "Under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, this epic written through the courage, wisdom and unwavering resistance of our noble nation proclaimed to the world that the national will cannot be held captive by any force," he said, referring to the popular mobilization that repelled the putschists within hours.

Duran noted that remembering the events of July 15 remains one of the defining moments in Türkiye's republican history, serving both as a tribute to those who lost their lives and those wounded during the coup bid, and as a solemn responsibility toward future generations to safeguard democratic achievements. The commemoration ceremonies held annually across the country underscore the popular resolve to prevent any future threat to the elected government.

Tribute to martyrs and veterans

"Strong states stand not only because of the resources they possess, but because of nations that protect their history, values and national memory," Duran stated in his message. He emphasized that the anniversary honors the sacrifice of civilians and security personnel who defended constitutional order against the Gülenist-led infiltration attempt that targeted the country's democratic foundations.

"I remember with mercy and gratitude our noble martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the homeland, and extend my appreciation to our heroic veterans," Duran said. The coup attempt began on the night of July 15, 2016, when military units aligned with the Fetullah Terrorist Organization seized strategic bridges and attacked key installations in Ankara and Istanbul, killing 249 people and wounding thousands before being repelled by civilian resistance and loyal security forces.
