President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by phone Tuesday with Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council. The leaders addressed bilateral relations and the security situation in Sudan, with Erdoğan reaffirming Türkiye's commitment to Sudan's territorial integrity and political unity.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation on Tuesday with Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, chairman of Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council, to discuss strengthening ties between Ankara and Khartoum amid ongoing instability in the Northeast African nation. The dialogue reflected Türkiye's continued engagement with Sudan during a period marked by internal conflict and humanitarian challenges.

According to a statement released by Türkiye's Communications Directorate, the two leaders evaluated bilateral relations and exchanged views on the latest security developments within Sudan. President Erdoğan emphasized Ankara's unwavering commitment to preserving Sudan's territorial integrity and political unity, while noting that Turkish officials are closely observing the efforts of the Sudanese army to establish stability and security throughout the country.

Commitment to Sudan's stability

Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye's solidarity with Sudan during this critical period, underscoring that Ankara's support would extend beyond diplomatic backing to include continued humanitarian assistance for affected populations. The president's remarks align with Türkiye's broader policy of maintaining strong ties with African nations and contributing to conflict resolution efforts across the continent. Sudan has been grappling with internal strife since April 2023, when clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, creating one of the world's most severe displacement crises.

Continued humanitarian efforts

The phone call also served to reinforce the historic bonds between Türkiye and Sudan, two nations with deep cultural and religious connections dating back centuries. Turkish aid agencies have maintained a significant presence in Sudan, delivering relief supplies to civilians affected by the ongoing hostilities. Erdoğan assured al-Burhan that humanitarian assistance from Türkiye would persist, reflecting Ankara's consistent approach to standing with friendly nations during times of difficulty. The conversation concluded with mutual expressions of goodwill and a shared desire to further enhance cooperation between the two countries across multiple sectors.
