Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif early Sunday welcomed President Donald Trump's "extraordinary efforts" to pursue peace with Iran following a call with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan and Pakistan. Sharif said the discussion provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on advancing the peace process.
Islamabad offers to host talks
The premier noted that Islamabad would continue its efforts "with utmost sincerity" and expressed hope that Pakistan could host the next round of negotiations very soon, according to his office. The call comes amid ongoing diplomacy to de-escalate tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Gulf crisis context
Regional leaders have intensified initiatives to prevent escalation in the Gulf. Islamabad maintains close ties with both Washington and Tehran, positioning Pakistan as a mediator in the crisis disrupting energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz since late February.
