Kyiv mayor reports 1 dead, 24 injured in Russian missile attack

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person was killed and 24 others injured in a large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone strike on the Ukrainian capital, as authorities confirmed residential buildings and a student dormitory were damaged in the overnight assault that followed warnings of imminent Russian retaliation.
Overnight assault on capital
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Sunday reported that a large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital had killed at least one person and injured 24 others, striking residential buildings, a student dormitory and commercial facilities in the latest escalation of the conflict. The strikes occurred overnight after Ukrainian and US intelligence officials warned that Moscow could be preparing missile attacks following a deadly Ukrainian strike that prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to order retaliation, according to the Kyiv Independent.
Prior warnings of missile strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that intelligence from Ukrainian, US and European sources indicated Russia could be preparing to use Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missiles, urging international pressure on Moscow before further escalation occurs. Ukraine’s Air Force warned late Saturday that the missile system may have been launched as part of the assault on the capital.
Tymur Tkachenko, Kyiv’s military administrator, said the city was facing a “massive ballistic attack” and urged residents to remain in shelters during the bombardment.
Civilian impact and casualties
Klitschko wrote on Telegram that the number of injured had risen to 24, including a 15-year-old boy, with three people in serious condition. At least 13 people have been taken to hospital for treatment following the strikes that damaged a car service center and a shopping mall alongside residential structures.
